Tabulator: a free, open source Handsontable alternative
Looking for a Handsontable alternative? Tabulator is a fully featured JavaScript data grid that is MIT licensed and genuinely free for commercial use, with spreadsheet mode and range selection built in.
Tabulator, running live below. Sort a column, edit a cell, drag a header, or page through the data.
Handsontable is a polished spreadsheet style data grid, and its Excel like editing experience is excellent. The thing that catches a lot of people out is the licence. Handsontable has not been open source since version 6.2.2 back in 2018. Today it is a proprietary product that is free only for non commercial and evaluation use, which means any project tied to commercial activity needs a paid licence.
Tabulator is MIT licensed and genuinely free, including for commercial production use. There is no licence key, no commercial tier, and no usage tied to whether your project makes money. You can read the source, fork it, ship it, and never think about it again.
Tabulator vs Handsontable
If your project is for research, private study, or a quick evaluation, Handsontable is free to use. The moment it becomes part of anything commercial, you need to buy a licence. For a lot of teams that is a surprise they find out about late, often after the grid is already wired deep into the product.
Tabulator removes that decision entirely. It is open source under the MIT licence, so the same library you prototype with is the one you ship to production, at no cost.
And it is not a cut down option. Tabulator covers the spreadsheet style features people choose Handsontable for, alongside a full set of data grid features:
- Spreadsheet mode with multiple sheets and tabbed navigation
- Cell range selection across rows, columns, and arbitrary ranges
- Inline editing with a wide range of built in editors and input validation
- Clipboard copy and paste, including from Excel and other spreadsheets
- Row grouping, tree data, and frozen rows and columns
- Import and download for CSV, JSON, and XLSX, plus PDF and print output
- Remote sorting, filtering, and pagination for server side data
Zero dependencies, any framework
Tabulator is plain JavaScript with no runtime dependencies. It works with React, Vue, and Angular through official wrappers, and works just as well with no framework at all. There is a framework setup guide in the documentation to get you started.
It uses a virtual DOM to render large datasets quickly, so big grids stay smooth without any special configuration.
When Handsontable is the better choice
To be fair to Handsontable, its spreadsheet experience is its specialty, and it shows. If you need a deeply Excel like grid with a mature formula engine front and centre, and a paid licence with commercial support is something your team is happy with, Handsontable is a strong, well built option.
Use Handsontable if a heavyweight, formula driven spreadsheet experience is the core of your product and you are comfortable paying for a commercial licence.
Use Tabulator if you want a fully featured grid with spreadsheet capabilities that is free and open source under the MIT licence, with nothing to pay when you move to production.
