Tabulator: a free, open source AG Grid alternative

Looking for an AG Grid alternative? Tabulator is a fully featured JavaScript data grid that is MIT licensed, has zero dependencies, and keeps the good stuff out of a paid enterprise tier.

Tabulator, running live below. Sort a column, edit a cell, drag a header, or page through the data.

If you have spent any time building data grids on the web, you have run into AG Grid. It is a capable library, and the Enterprise edition is genuinely powerful. The catch is that a lot of what people actually reach for lives behind that paid Enterprise licence, and the bundle is heavier than most projects need.

Tabulator takes a different approach. It is a single MIT licensed library with no paid tier, no licence keys, and no feature gates. Row grouping, cell range selection, undo and redo history, tree data, clipboard, and export to CSV and XLSX are all just there, in the box, for free.

Tabulator vs AG Grid

AG Grid splits into two products. AG Grid Community is MIT licensed and free, and it covers the basics like sorting, simple filtering, and cell editing. AG Grid Enterprise is a commercial product sold per developer, and it is where the headline features sit: integrated charting, pivoting, master and detail views, the server side row model, set filters, and yes, even cell range selection and undo and redo.

That model works well if you are building a large internal analytics app and you have the budget for it. For a lot of the rest of us, paying a per developer licence to get range selection or row grouping is hard to justify.

With Tabulator you get one library that includes:

  • Row grouping with collapsible groups and group level calculations
  • Cell range selection across rows, columns, and arbitrary ranges
  • Undo and redo history on every edit
  • Tree and nested data with expandable nodes
  • Spreadsheet mode with multiple sheets
  • Download and import for CSV, JSON, and XLSX, plus PDF and print output
  • Remote sorting, filtering, and pagination for server side data

None of those sit behind a paywall, because there is no paywall.

Zero dependencies, any framework

Tabulator is plain JavaScript with no runtime dependencies, so you are not pulling a tree of extra packages into your bundle. It works with React, Vue, and Angular, and it works just as happily with no framework at all. There are official wrappers and a framework setup guide in the documentation to get you going.

Under the hood it uses a virtual DOM to render large datasets smoothly, so a grid with thousands of rows stays responsive without you having to reach for a special edition.

When AG Grid is the better choice

I want to be fair here. If you need integrated charting wired directly into the grid, deep pivoting, or the server side row model handling millions of rows with enterprise grade support contracts, AG Grid Enterprise is built for exactly that and does it well. It is a serious tool for serious enterprise dashboards, and the price reflects the engineering behind it.

Use AG Grid Enterprise if integrated charts, pivoting, and dedicated commercial support are core requirements and the per developer licence fits your budget.

Use Tabulator if you want a fully featured, fast data grid that is free and open source, with no enterprise tier to upgrade to and no licence keys to manage.
